Puppy Chronicles ...  The birth! Friday, November 7, 2003

Day 1
Birthing went well - labor starting at about 6 a.m, last puppy delivered at 2 p.m.  Luna did a great job!  First puppy was one of the "bruisers", later named Ranger, born at 1 lb  oz.  Light grey male, light goggles, chunky, large white tip on his tail.  This labor took a while - he came feet first, and Luna just did not want to start this painful process!  but about the 5th time one of those little feet came out, I held on, didn't pull, just didn't let it "disappear" again ... got the tail, then the second foot, and FINALLY ... He was a squaller, and latched right on to mom.  This guy doesn't wait around! and was already fairly mobile, and kept pretty upright on his own.

Little Nemo, Puppy No. 2, came out with a "whoosh" (quite literally), and considering he was about a 1/3 of the size of his older brother, 9 oz at birth, it's no surprise!  Head first.  Very dark grey, darker & more extensive facial markings, a small white tail tip.  Poor thing had no baby fat, and was just so tiny! but pinked up very quickly, and suckled almost immediately, very active.  Good sign!  Looks like he might have a softer coat (laid flatter as it dried), but no curly Q's!

Puppy No. 3, Mason, was another "bruiser", born at 1 lb oz, also head first - and like his brother Ranger, required a bit of "help" getting out (just held on firmly beneath his jaw, did not pull).  A medium grey, medium facial markings, a small white tip on his tail.  As consistent with his later personality, he came into life fairly easy-going, good quick reflexes, but not the "forwardness" of his two older brothers.

Puppy No. 4, Toddy, is my "medium" fellow - born at 1 lb 1 oz, feet first.  Like his brother Mason, similar markings, similar personality.  I've taken to calling them "the twins" as a result.  He had some liquid in his lungs and so it took a bit longer to get a "clear" breathing pattern out of him.  Like the rest, good instant reflexes and suckling.  Already a lover.
